The company was originally established by Liborio Cannata, an Italian ex patriot. By 1910 he had accumulated enough funds to start his own company L. Cannata, sculptor and artistic monumental mason. Coincidentally, it was the same year that the Union of South Africa was established. Liborio married Ernestina Risi in 1911 and together they had four children.

Italo Fillippo Cannata (Nonno) was 17 when he began assisting his mother in running the family business, L. Cannata and Sons. A man of great charm and impeccable good taste, he made the business a household name in the then booming Johannesburg.

The company thrived and in 1956 Italo Fillippo’s youngest son Italo Liborio Cannata was born. He too followed in his father’s footsteps and was soon called upon to take over the business. His determination and passion helped the Cannata brand flourish into what is today. With his innovative ideas and drive for success he ventured in many diverse avenues in the industry. In 1960 the company diversified into quarrying and bought the first quarrying rights in Rustenburg which was duly sold to Impala Platinum.

L Cannata and Sons (Cape) was born, headed by Italo Liborio Cannata, the third generation, and what you see today is a celebration of the tenacity and honesty that has kept the name and the family together doing what they do best, creating works of art and beautifully crafted marble and granite constructions in the major and prestigious buildings of this city and abroad.

The story continues and Italo Liborio’s children are now working closely under his leadership to build an expand a fourth generation family business, L. Cannata and Sons (Cape). Long may this trend continue.
